I love working with Older Adults. They remember the DC suburbs before the Beltway and the Metro. Long before we had thousands of shops and restaurants, they frequented the Tastee Diner, the Little Tavern, and O’Donnell’s Seafood. They piled the kids into the car and headed to Gifford’s Ice Cream for a sundae with “Swiss Sauce.” My older clients built our desirable and friendly neighborhoods into the communities they are today.
Some of my clients decide to sell the house to move closer to their children and grandchildren. Some want to travel the world, and be unencumbered by the responsibilities of home ownership. In other cases, my older clients need a home that better suits their changing lifestyle and physical abilities. It may be a smaller home on a single level, or an apartment in a retirement community, such as Leisure World or Riderwood, where I am Preferred Agent. In any circumstance, selling the home they’ve lived in for 40 to 50 years (or more) is a complex process and, at times, an emotionally difficult situation. They raised families and made lifelong friends of their neighbors in the place they call home. The process requires patience and understanding of a highly experienced Real Estate team.
In 2015, my team and I created S.M.A.R.T Moves – our Senior Move and Relocation Team. Recognizing that our older adult clients often require assistance at every stage of process, we are committed to provide a high level of customer service: from readying the home for sale, to closing the transaction, we oversee the the complete process to ensure a smooth and timely experience.
Our S.M.A.R.T. Moves consultation often begins with a discussion of local properties available to suit their needs, if they have not yet identified a new property. Then, we discuss their current home’s value, with a carefully prepared market analysis, and establish the right sale price. We ensure that the legal documents needed to list the property on the market are properly submitted.
At this point, we get down to brass tacks – we prepare the home for sale. We employ a robust team of professionals to:
- Conduct a pre-listing inspection and make any needed repairs to the property
- Prepare for downsizing – we have a professional organizer to donate, sell, or trash items that won’t be moved to the new property
- Professionally paint and stage the home to appeal to a broad range of buyers
- Market the home with mailers, print articles and online advertising – reaching technically savvy buyers of the new generation
- Host an open house, showcasing the home in an appealing light
- Pack and move the clients to their new residence, with a team of professional movers
