FRESHFARM Farmers Markets | Where to Find the Best Local Produce in the DMV
Want to try in-season produce that doesn’t come from across the country wrapped in plastic, all while connecting with your community and supporting small family businesses and local farmers? You’ll experience all that and more at your nearest farmers market—and the DMV has about 27 different pop-ups to choose from! Want to try in-season produce that doesn’t come from across the country wrapped in plastic, all while connecting with your community and supporting small family businesses and local farmers? You’ll experience all that and more at your nearest farmers market—and the DMV has about 27 different pop-ups to choose from!
Most of these locations have been open since April or even earlier, but don’t fret if you’re just hopping on the bandwagon now as many remain open into the colder months of the year. Even after summer dwindles into fall and fall into winter, several market locations including the Dupont Circle Market (where FRESHFARM began in 1997), will remain open year-round but typically reserved to the weekend.
If you’re interested in hopping around the numerous FRESHFARM farmers markets nearby to see what each has to offer, the location guide we've created at the end of this post makes it easy to browse and discover which markets are closest to you.
|What is FRESHFARM?
FRESHFARM is the nonprofit parent organization of most of the farmers markets open in the DMV, working to connect local farmers and food distributors with surrounding communities in search of seasonal foodstuffs. Established first as a public food education program in 1996, FRESHFARM joined forces with Community Foodworks in 2019 where it launched into the nonprofit cause “to unlock new and diversified revenue streams for farmers, while expanding access for under-served populations and community organizations.” To date, FRESHFARM is the third-largest farmers market organization in the United States.
FRESHFARM is also making a concerted effort through their Market Share program to combat food insecurity among the communities that it serves, especially in the wake of all the economic hardship brought forth by the pandemic. By signing up for Market Share, customers subscribe to a weekly bundle of seasonal produce for two fixed rates depending on how many people per family. All customers using government food assistance (SNAP/EBT/P-EBT/WIC) get 75% off their weekly Market Share order. Through this discount, families are being fed every week for as low at $6.25!
